Ahhh, the joys of networking and seminars.
You meet all these people – some really cool, some really annoying, some really robotic.
That question comes up about a zillion times: “So, what do you do?”
What Would It Be Like To Never Have To Answer That Question, Ever Again?
Believe it or not, there is the possibility that we could seal off the elevator-speech shaft forever.
Here are two tantalizing possibilities for you:
Redirect The Conversation
Chances are, you’re already in a conversation with someone by the time they get around to this question. What were you chatting about up until then?
When they ask “what do you do?” you can say something like “Sure! But first, tell me more about _______. How does that work?”
Then continue finding out more about their challenges, their issues, their opportunities. If there’s a match to be made, they’ll tell you how you can help.
Then step in as the obvious solution. Because only when they see need, does it actually matter one bit what you do.
Build And Nurture Your Celebrity Brand
Do you have a sobriquet?
Have you been on the news?
Are you making the podcast rounds?
How did your book launch go?
Are you making great positive contributions in leading online discussion groups for your industry?
The point is, establish your celebrity brand. Become recognizable. Establish thought leadership in your niche.
They will approach you: “Say, aren’t you The Morning Adam™“?
Now, you don’t have to explain anything 🙂
(It helps if your (recognizable) logo is already on your shirt.)
